Navigating to Whangārei
Entering by boat
Whangārei Marina is located at S 35°43.474 . E 174°19.599 - locate us on Navigation Chart No. NZ5215. It is easy to find, but we recommend following this advice. Google Earth is also a great way to orientate yourself up the harbour.
It is recommended for sailing yachts to motor the final 3nm of the river on the rising tide and favour the outside curves of the river. Do not arrive on low tide. The best time is in the top half of the rising tide.
The channel is marked and dredged to a minimum of 1 meter below Chart Datum (lowest tide). The river bottom is soft mud. The tidal range is 2-3m.
The marina is located just after a lifting/open-on-demand bridge, and just before a small bridge - you can’t miss us!
Check out and plan for the bridge opening instructions before you arrive.
For foreign vessels
Marsden Cove Marina at the entrance to the harbour is the closest Port of First Arrival and departure for international vessels. (Note: During Covid 19 border restrictions The Bay of Islands Marina is the only sea port of entry operating). Customs, Immigration and MPI Biosecurity (Quarantine) are known to be pleasant and helpful.
